Personal, Social & Health Education

At Carleton House Preparatory School, our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) curriculum is designed to support the holistic development of our pupils, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to navigate their lives confidently and responsibly. Aligned with the UK National Curriculum for PSHE for Key Stage 1 and 2, and supported by the Jigsaw scheme, our programme addresses essential aspects of personal development, including mental health, relationships, and social responsibility.

Key Features of Our PSHE Curriculum:

The Jigsaw Scheme:

Our PSHE curriculum is supported by the Jigsaw scheme, a comprehensive and structured programme that provides a clear and engaging framework for teaching PSHE. Jigsaw covers a wide range of topics through six key themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me. Each theme includes a series of lessons designed to address specific aspects of personal and social development, ensuring a well-rounded approach to PSHE education.

Social and Emotional Learning:

Social and emotional learning is at the heart of our PSHE curriculum. Pupils develop skills such as empathy, resilience, and self-awareness through structured activities and discussions. They learn to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and handle challenges effectively, which are crucial for their overall wellbeing and success in life.

Health and Wellbeing:

Our curriculum addresses various aspects of health and wellbeing, including physical health, mental health, and healthy lifestyles. Pupils learn about nutrition, exercise, and the importance of mental health, gaining practical knowledge to support their personal wellbeing. Lessons also cover strategies for managing stress and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Relationships and Respect:

Understanding and respecting relationships are key components of our PSHE curriculum. Pupils explore topics such as friendship, family dynamics, and respectful behaviour. They learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and build positive relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.

Assessment and Personal Development:

Pupils' progress in PSHE is assessed through observation, participation in discussions, and reflection activities. We provide feedback to support their personal development and help them set goals for improvement. The focus is on encouraging self-awareness and growth rather than formal assessments.

Celebrating Achievements and Personal Growth:

We celebrate pupils' achievements and personal growth through various activities and events. Recognising their efforts and progress helps to build confidence and reinforces the importance of PSHE in their overall development.

Progression Through Key Stages:

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2):
In the younger year groups, pupils are introduced to foundational concepts in PSHE, including understanding emotions, developing positive relationships, and recognising the importance of healthy choices. They learn about personal safety, respecting others, and basic aspects of their own identity and self-esteem. Activities are designed to be interactive and age-appropriate, fostering a supportive learning environment.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6):
As pupils advance, they explore more complex topics related to personal development, social relationships, and economic understanding. They engage in discussions about friendships, managing feelings, and making informed choices. The curriculum also covers topics such as internet safety, financial literacy, and preparing for transition to secondary school. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and develop strategies for managing various aspects of their lives.

At Carleton House, we are committed to providing a supportive and comprehensive PSHE curriculum that prepares our pupils for the challenges and opportunities they will face in life. Through the structured Jigsaw programme and a focus on social, emotional, and practical skills, we ensure that our pupils develop into confident, responsible, and well-rounded individuals.
