History

At Carleton House Preparatory School, our History curriculum ignites curiosity and a passion for learning about the past. Aligned with the UK National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2, our History programme equips pupils with a deep understanding of significant events, people, and changes that have shaped both Britain and the wider world. Through investigative and analytical learning, we help pupils to develop a sense of identity, understand their heritage, and appreciate the complexities of historical events. 

Key Features of Our History Curriculum: 

Investigative Approach to Learning: 

History at Carleton House is taught through an investigative approach, encouraging pupils to ask questions, analyse evidence, and explore different perspectives. Pupils learn to develop critical thinking skills as they investigate primary and secondary sources, handle artefacts, and engage in historical enquiry to understand how events unfolded and their impact on the world today. 

Chronological Understanding and Historical Knowledge: 

Our curriculum ensures pupils develop a strong sense of chronology. They are taught to organise their understanding of history within a coherent framework, identifying key periods, dates, and significant turning points. This helps them appreciate the flow of historical events and recognise patterns of continuity and change over time. 

Understanding Cause and Consequence: 

Pupils are encouraged to explore the causes and consequences of historical events, helping them to think critically about why events happened and how they shaped society. By examining different perspectives and interpretations of history, they learn that history is complex and often influenced by diverse viewpoints. 

Historical Enquiry and Critical Thinking: 

At Carleton House, pupils are taught to approach history as detectives, using evidence to piece together the past. Understanding Britain’s and the World’s Past: 

Our History curriculum ensures that pupils understand key aspects of British history, including the impact of significant events such as the Norman Conquest, the Magna Carta, and the Industrial Revolution. In addition, they explore world history through topics like the Ancient civilisations, the Renaissance, and the impact of colonialism, enabling pupils to appreciate the interconnections between Britain and the wider world. 

Enrichment and Historical Experiences: 

We bring history to life through immersive learning experiences, including educational trips to museums, historical sites, and interactive workshops. These hands-on experiences allow pupils to step back in time and develop a deeper connection with the subject matter. 

Progression Through Key Stages: 

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2): 

Pupils begin their historical journey by learning about key historical figures and events in Britain and the world. They explore topics such as famous explorers, significant monarchs, and events like the Great Fire of London. Through stories, timelines, and role-play, pupils develop an understanding of the concepts of chronology and change, helping them to place historical events in context. 

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6): 

As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they deepen their understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present day, as well as key civilisations such as Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Topics like the Roman Empire, the Vikings, and World War II are studied in depth. Pupils learn to make connections between different periods and societies, understanding how events are linked and how they shape the modern world.
