Frequently Asked Questions
We want our primary school aged child to move to Carleton House. How do we do this?
Entry may be made into Year groups if places are available. After visiting the school your child will be expected to spend the day with the relevant age group. An assessment will be made as to whether a placement at Carleton House would be appropriate for your child.
Parents need to complete a registration form and, if a place is offered, a deposit will be required.
I am worried about how my 4 year old will settle in
Carleton House has a very caring, nurturing environment. During the Summer Term, prior to entry in September, the new intake visits the school in small groups spending half a day in the Reception class. This enables them to familiarise themselves with the staff and the school. During the first week of the new Autumn term, Reception pupils are eased into school life with half day attendances.
What opportunities will I have to discuss my child's progress?
Great emphasis is put on close contact and co-operation between home and school. Parents are encouraged to discuss their child's progress with the Headteacher and staff on both a formal and informal basis. There are regular reports, parent/teacher meetings and open mornings.
What is the school day?
Children are required to attend school from 8.45 am until 3.25 pm for Infants and 3.35 pm for Juniors, Monday to Friday. Parents are provided with a calendar of term dates at the start of each school year.
What are the lunch arrangements?
From September 2009 lunch will be provided by the school at additional cost. We encourage all our children to eat healthily - fizzy drinks, chocolates and sweets are not permitted. Lunchtimes are supervised with staff on hand to ensure that lunch is eaten. Following lunch children can play outside weather permitting. There is an Infants' playground which is separate from the rough and tumble of the Juniors' playground.
Children should also bring a healthy snack for the morning break. Milk is provided for Infants who require it (at a small charge).
To aid concentration we also encourage children to bring a water bottle for their desk. In addition there are water fountains in the school.
What provision is made for children outside of the core hours?
The school is open to pupils from 8 o'clock at no cost to the parents.
Kids' Club provides an excellent after school service up to 6.00 pm. The children are well supervised while enjoying various activities including games, art and craft, drama, board games and quizzes. They also have the opportunity to do homework, supervised in a small quiet area, if parents wish. There is a charge for this service.
What should I do if my child cannot attend school?
When a child is absent, for any reason, parents are asked to inform the school immediately. Parents should provide a written note of explanation when the child returns to school.
Parents should avoid taking holidays in term time. If this is unavoidable permission must be sought, in writing, from the Headteacher. Absences taken without permission will be recorded as unauthorised.
How can I as a parent get involved?
Carleton has a very active PTA who are always happy to receive support in what ever capacity it can be given. There may also be an opportunity to join the Management Committee should one of the Governors' positions become available.
